L. J. "Lew" Buzzell 1909 - 2004

L.J. "Lew" Buzzell, 94, 1704 1st Ave SW, Minot, died Friday in a Minot nursing home.

He was born October 21, 1909, in Aurelia, North Dakota, the son of James Vincent and Ida (Nelson) Buzzell. He was reared and educated in the Bowbells area. On July 4, 1935, he married Emma Maurer in Bowbells. She died on May 21, 1987. He worked as a barber before entering the United States Army in 1942. He served in Europe during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to North Dakota. He worked various jobs, including as an agent for Westland Oil and as a Barber. He was employed at the Ward County Veterans Service Office from 1967 until 1986 when he retired as Ward County Veterans Service Officer. On November 27, 1996, he married Betty Davidson-Fryer in Minot.

Lew was involved in community organizations, including the Golden K Kiwanis, the Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, Eagles Aerie, and in branches of the Masonic Lodge, including, the Scottish Rites Bodies, Star in the West Lodge and the Minot Shriners Club. He was also very active in Veterans organizations, holding lifetime memberships in the National Order of Trench Rats, Disabled American Veterans, which he served as State Commander for one year, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Military Order of the Cootie. He was also a member of the AMVETS and held membership in the Minot American Legion for 52 years. He was once given the honor of being Commander for the Day with the American Legion. He was also a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot.

Survivors: wife, Betty, Minot; sons, James H. (Fran) Buzzell, Kenmare and Robert L. (Hong) Buzzell, Tokeland, WA; six grandchildren, Don (Rea) Buzzell, North Bend, WA, Stephanie (Brian) Rowinski, Tacoma, WA, Cassandra (Tom) Mlakar, Covington, WA, Bryce Buzzell, Renton, WA, James Darrel (Charlene) Buzzell, OK and Jon Dana Buzzell, CA; seven great-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren and sister, Bernice Hilts, West Covina, CA. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Emma; parents, James and Ida Buzzell and brothers, Dom and Frank Buzzell.

Memorial Service: Friday, 11:00 a.m. at St. John The Apostle Catholic Church, Minot.

Cremation has taken place. Friends may sign a register on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: Friday, 3:00 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare, ND.
