Martha "Penny" Butts 1951 - 2011

Martha “Penny” Muus was born on August 28, 1951, a daughter of Magner and Margaret (Pfeffer) Muus in Minot, ND. Penny was the third of six children being raised in Minot.  Penny was baptized and confirmed at St. Leo’s Church where she was a member.  Penny attended and graduated from St. Leo’s School, Bishop Ryan High School, Gonzaga University and Minot State University.

After college Penny enjoyed working for the Girl Scouts and then began a fulfilling teaching career which spanned over 25 years, teaching at Little Flower, Longfellow Elementary and Jim Hill Middle School, retiring in 2008.  Penny also coached swimming along with her other teaching duties.

Penny was previously married to James Twomey and two daughters were born from this marriage, Erin and Meg.

On October 26, 1991, Penny was united in marriage to Richard Butts in Minot.  They were happy to have recently celebrated their 20th Anniversary.  Penny loved to spend time with her family and friends. Penny loved Rice Lake and she fondly referred to it as the “Best Place on Earth”.  Penny had a friend in her dog Buffy.

Those who shared in her life:  Husband of 20 years, Richard, Minot;  Children: Erin Twomey, Boston, MA and Meg (Shaun) Grindall, Moorhead, MN,; step-children: Nathan (Lindsey) Butts, West Salem WI and Jessica Butts, Edmonton, Alberta ; Grandchildren Ella and Reece Butts;  Mother: Margaret Muus, Siblings:  John (Doran) Muus of Englewood, NJ,  Mary Louise (Arlo) Tonnessen of Burnsville, MN, Dr. Carl (Dr. Kristine) Muus, of Missoula, MT Laura (Richard) Wohl, of Minot, Paul (Joan) Muus of Boulder, CO. Nieces and Nephews: Jack and Nick Muus, Troy Tonnessen, Tracy Cogan, Julie Ann Martinez de Ubago, James Muus, Jennifer Muus, John Muus, Adam Wohl, Annie Wohl, Alex Wohl, Kalen Muus, Kee lee Muus and Cam Muus;  Brothers and sisters-in-law: Arden (Carol) Butts, Minot, ND, Mary Ann Butts, Minot, ND, Dean (Bobbi) Butts, Albany, OR;. 

Penny was preceded in death by her father Magner Muus.

Visitation:  Sunday, November 13, 2011 from 1-6 at Thompson Larson Funeral Home, Minot

Vigil Prayer Service:  Sunday, November 13, 2011 at 6 pm in Thompson Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot

Mass of Christian Burial:  Monday, November 14, 2011 at 10 am at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Minot

Burial:  Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot
