Ethel G. Burke 1920 - 2006 Ethel G. Burke, 85, 404 32nd Ave. SW, Apt. 13, Minot formerly of Berthold, died Wednesday, January 4, 2006, in a Minot hospital. Ethel was born February 26, 1920, in Minot, ND, the daughter of Robert and Sarah Black. She was raised and educated in Berthold. She attended Minot State Teachers College where she earned her teaching certificate. She taught in country schools in the Berthold and Blaisdell areas and later taught school in Berthold. On December 26, 1942 she married Eugene J. "Gene" Burke at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Berthold. They lived in the Berthold area where Ethel taught school and Gene farmed. In 1946 they moved to Granville until returning to the Burke homestead in 1948. In 1956, they moved to the Black family farm near Berthold. In 1986 they moved to rural Burlington and have resided in Minot for the past seven years. Gene died on October 28, 2003. Ethel was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Berthold where she was active in the altar society. While living in Minot she was a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church. Ethel and Gene were members of the Minot Trail Riders and the Midwest Chariot Club, where they both raced chariots for six years. Ethel loved dogs and horses and she loved to fish. She especially liked spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The last few years, following Gene's death she enjoyed traveling to the casinos with her friends. She was a volunteer for a number of years with St. Joseph's Auxiliary and for several years made stuffed bears for the Domestic Violence Crisis Center. She also volunteered with numerous other organizations. Ethel and her husband were members of the Moose Lodge and the Eagles Aerie, both in Minot. Survivors: Son, William "Bill" (Elaine) Burke, Douglas; daughter-in-law, Jeannie Burke, Mohall; grandchildren, Lori Burke and Tracy (Brian) Carriere, Michelle Haman and Travis (Bobbi) Burke; great-grandchildren, Amanda, Cody, Crysta and Hayden. Ethel was preceded in death by her husband Eugene J. "Gene" Burke; son, Gerald "Jerry" Burke; and her parents, Robert and Sarah Black. Funeral: Saturday, January 7, 2005 at 10:30 a.m., at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Berthold. Visitation and vigil prayer service: Visitation Friday, from noon to 7:00 p.m., with the vigil prayer service at 5:00 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.
