Celeste E. Burgeson • 1902 - 2005 Celeste E. Burgeson, 102, 305 8th Ave. NE, Minot, ND, died Wednesday, October 5, 2005, at a Minot nursing home. Celeste Eunice Burgeson was born on November 4, 1902, the daughter of Andrew G. and Anna C. (Koehler) Burgeson in Hector, Minnesota. At the age of two, her family moved to a homestead near Rice Lake, ND. She attended schools in Douglas, ND, graduating from Douglas High School's first graduating class in 1921. She began her higher education in Minot. She graduated from the elementary course of the State Normal School, Minot, in 1922, and from the standard course at Valley City State College in 1923. She continued her training by attending summer school in North Dakota, the University of Minnesota, and Iowa State College. She earned her B.S. in Home Economics from the University of Minnesota in 1942, and her M.S. in Home Economics (Home Management) from Penn State University in 1943. She had also attended Teachers College Columbia University during the summer of 1953. Celeste began her teaching career in 1924. She taught in Dazey, ND, and Cooperstown, ND until 1927 and taught in Lewiston, ID until 1942. She then taught at the University of Vermont in 1943, the University of Connecticut in 1944, and the University of Minnesota in 1946. In 1944, she began her position at Indiana State College, Terre Haute, Indiana. She was the Home Management Instructor. During her tenure there, she held various positions which included: the State Chairman of the Home Management and Equipment Division of Indiana Home Economics Association, the vice-President of the Terre Haute Branch American Association of University Women, President of the Faculty Women's Club, and Secretary of Indiana State College Chapter of American Association of University Professors. She retired from teaching in 1969. Celeste moved back to Minot in the late 1990s to be closer to family and resided at Trinity Homes. Celeste was an active member of the Central Presbyterian Church, Terra Haute, where she was a member of the Ladies Aid groups, Bible studies, and became an ordained ruling Elder in 1974. She was also a life-long member of Presbyterian Church of U.S.A., Delta Kappa Gamma, American Home Economics Association, American Association of University Women, American Association of University Professors, Indiana State Teachers Association, and Alpha Omicron Pi. She painted with oils, acrylics, and water colors. Art fascinated
Celeste; she collected American prints. She was interested in
rocks and minerals. She also enjoyed traveling to Europe, Asia,
Central and South America, and Australia. She played bridge and
learned how to invest in the stock market. Celeste was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Douglas Burgeson; sister-in-law, Rose Burgeson. Funeral: Monday, October 10, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at
Trinity Homes Chapel, Minot, ND. Visitation: Sunday from Noon until 5 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
