Richard John “Dick” Buettner was born February 20, 1929, a son of John George and Anna Jane (Behm) Buettner, in Minot, ND.  He was raised and educated in Minot, ND. He attended St. Leos High School.

He enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country on the U.S.S. Pasadena during World War II. He was honorably discharged November 14, 1947.

He returned to Minot, where he graduated from Minot State Teachers College in 1952, and was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Education. While attended Minot State Teachers College, he worked as a cop. Dick married Monica Gail Dolan on April 13th, 1952, in Bowbells, ND and they started their home in Newburg, where he began teaching and coaching. They also resided in Norma where he taught school and coached for two years. He gained employment in Minot at International Harvester (I.H.), where he worked as a Sales and Zone Regional Manager of the Motor Truck Sales Division for seven years.  He was transferred to Phoenix, AZ, and continued working for I.H. for thirteen more years. Around 1977, he purchased Sundance White Trucks Inc. in Phoenix.  In 1979, he bought Apache Junction Mobile Home Sales and later worked as a realtor for Apache Realty at Apache Wells in Mesa, Arizona.  For 20 years, he worked as a golf pro at White Bear Lake in Saskatchewan, giving lessons to adults and free lessons to children. In 2005, Dick and Monica moved to back to Minot, ND. He rejoined The First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Trustee. He spent the remainder of his life in Minot, where he lovingly cared for his wife.

He had been an active member of the Phoenix, AZ Masons and El Zaribah Shrine, where he was a clown named "Big Birdie". He also was a member of the Masons and Kem Shriners in Minot, ND. He was active in the Moose Lodge, The Elks Lodge and Toastmasters in both Phoenix AZ, and Minot, ND throughout his lifetime. He enjoyed making people and children smile. He visited hospitals and nursing homes along with raising money to help the Shriners Hospitals for Children.  He had a passion for playing and teaching golf, which began while caddying at the age of 12. He enjoyed playing pool and pinochle and participated in competitive bridge and golf tournaments.

Surviving family includes:  wife of 58 years, Monica, Minot; children: Jay (Mary Theresa) Buettner, Mountainside, NJ, and Bill (Millie) Buettner, Paris, France, and Carolee (Don) Novak, Mandan, ND; grandchildren, Loren (Anna) Novak, Bismarck, and Vicki Novak, and her fiancé, Matt Gross, Bismarck; great-grandchildren, Adam, Laiken, and Aurora; brothers, Leo Buettner, Maple Valley, WA, Don (Karen) Buettner, Sun Lake, AZ, Mark (Chris) Buettner, Mesa, AZ; sisters, Marie (Neil) Gronning, Tacoma, WA, Ursula (Boyd) Shaw, Parshall, ND, and Lois (Don) Bower, Zephyrhills, FL; sisters-in-law, Pat Buettner, Lakeview Terrace, CA, Helen Buettner, Walla Walla, WA, Ramona Buettner, Minot, and Catherine Buettner, Minot; brother-in-law, Ed Knuckey, Olympia, WA; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and friend and Cardiologist, Dr. Robert Percell, Minot.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Raymond, Bernard “Bud”, Lawrence, and Lyle Buettner; and a sister, Eileen Knuckey.

Funeral: Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Minot.

Interment:  Thursday at 2 pm at Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.

Visitation:  Tuesday from noon to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials: are preferred to the Minot Chapter Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.

Immediately following the funeral service, please join the family for a time of fellowship and desserts in the fellowship hall.  The graveside service will commence on Thursday, at 2:00 pm.
