Lyle Michael Buettner 1933 - 2003

Lyle Michael Buettner, 70, 313 21st St, NW, Minot, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003 in his residence.

Lyle was born on March 28, 1933, in Minot, ND, one of twelve children of John G. and Anna J. (Behm) Buettner. He attended and graduated from St. Leo's High School in Minot. While attending high school, he was active in sports and was a member of the St. Leo's Lions basketball team. He also worked after school and several summers on his Uncle John Behm's farm near Des Lacs, ND. He joined the US Army in 1955, and served as a security clerk for most of his tour, being stationed in San Antonio and El Paso, TX. While in the Army, he married Catherine Alice Stapleton on April 23, 1955, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hansboro, ND. He was released from active duty in 1957, and remained in the US Army Reserves until his honorable discharge in 1963. Lyle and Catherine lived in Selby, SD, where he was chief mechanic for Delzer Construction Company. They moved to Minot, where he worked for Western Welding Company until 1974. They purchased the Norge Village Laundromat, located on Broadway in Minot, and eventually expanded his business into Buettner Rentals, Inc., which provided coin operated washers and dryers for Minot area businesses and apartment complexes. He owned and operated this business until his retirement in 1998. They remained living in Minot until the time of his death.

Lyle was a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the former member of the Eagles Aerie, where he and Catherine enjoyed many evenings listening and dancing to music. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed catching walleye in the spring, summer, fall and winter. Lyle had a deep appreciation and love for time spent with family and friends, and enjoyed a wonderful sense of humor towards life.

Survivors: wife, Catherine Buettner, Minot; five children, Steven Buettner, Minot, Denise Christensen, Chaska, MN, Mary Alice Buettner, Fargo, ND, Kelly Schmidt and husband Joe, Minot, and Cathleen Haugen and husband Earl, Thompson, ND; seven grandchildren, Michael Zimmer, Devin Christensen, Megan, Marlee and Josie Schmidt, and Ian and Emma Haugen; eight siblings, Marie (Neal) Gronning, Tacoma, WA, Richard (Monica) Buettner, Apache Wells, AZ, Larry (Helen) Buettner, Walla Walla, WA, Leo (Carol) Buettner, Renton, WA, Ursula (Boyd) Shaw, Parshall, ND, Donald (Karen) Buettner, Manteca, CA, and Mark (Chris) Buettner, Minot; two sisters-in-law, Ramona Buettner-Klungtvedt, Minot and Patricia Buettner, Lakeview Terrace, CA; brother-in-law, Ed Knuckey, Olympia, WA; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive. His parents, two brothers, Raymond and Bernard (Bud) Buettner and sister, Eileen Knuckey preceded him in death.

Funeral Service: Monday, April 28, 2003, 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot, ND.

Rosary Recitation: Sunday, April 27, 2003, 4:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot, ND.

Visitation: Sunday, April 27, 2003, from noon to 5:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.
