Clarence R. Brothen 1911 - 2004 Clarence R. Brothen, 93, #3 Greenway, Minot, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, in his home. He was born on February 4, 1911, in Columbus, ND, to Carl and Randi (Hallum) Brothen. He attended country school in the Columbus area. He enlisted and served in the United States Army during World War II from 1942 through 1945, and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands for most of his tour, and was involved in the engineering and building of several tunnels and airports on the island. He returned to North Dakota and married Eldora Seney on October 10, 1948. With his brother, Lorry Brothen, he built and operated the Brothen Motel, the first motel in Minot. They also owned and operated a Standard Oil gas station in conjunction with the motel. They operated these businesses for over 22 years. They sold those businesses and started building homes in the Minot area, and continued in the construction business until his semi-retirement in the 1990's. He and Eldora lived in Minot their entire married lives. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, and was a former member of the American Legion, both of Minot. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing and was an avid bowler in his later years. Survivors: wife, Eldora, Minot; three brothers, Lorry (Edna) Brothen, Minot, Magne (Betty) Brothen, Minot, and Edmund (Peggy) Brothen, Minneapolis, MN; one sister-in-law, Pearl Brothen, in Oregon. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Alvin, Evald and Palmer Brothen. Funeral Service: Monday, June 7, 2004, 11:00 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot, ND. Visitation: Sunday, June 6, 2004, from noon to 5:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.
