Lawrence
Brietzke, 86, 806 5th St. SW, Minot, died Saturday, November
13, 2004, in a Minot nursing home.
Lawrence was born April 26, 1918, in Hingham, MT, the son
of Ernest William and Lydia (Allwin) Brietzke. He spent the early
part of his life in the Martin and Sawyer area. His family moved
to Minot when he was 7 years old. He graduated from Minot High
School in 1937 and graduated in Business Education in 1942 from
Minot State University. Lawrence earned a masters Degree in Education
in 1953 from the University Of North Dakota.
On January 22, 1943, Lawrence entered the United States Army,
serving with the 341st Infantry, 86th Blackhawk Division at the
Battle of the Bulge. He served in both the European and the South
Pacific Theaters. He was awarded the American Theater Service
Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, European African Middle
Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal.
He was honorably discharged February 23, 1946 as a Sergeant in
Fort Lewis, WA.
On June 28, 1945, while on a leave from the service, Lawrence
married Grace Norgard in Junction City, Kansas. They had two
children, Gloria Ann and John William Brietzke.
Lawrence was the superintendent and coach in different consolidated
schools in Barton, Denhoff, Tagus, Norwich and Kramer. His wife
was also a teacher at these schools. He later taught math and
reading in Minot Junior High and Jim Hill Junior high. From 1969-1980,
Lawrence was a reading consultant and Division Head in the Austin,
MN Public School System. Following his retirement, he and his
wife returned to Minot.
Lawrence was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, American
Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of Minot.
He enjoyed time with his family, camping, traveling, hunting,
fishing, reading, gardening, construction projects, high school
sports, and most forms of manual work. He was known for being
very innovative.
He is survived by: wife of 59 years, Grace, Minot;Son:

Son-in-law: Ted Decker, Marysville, WA;6 Grandchildren: Kristin,
Sonia and Angela Brietzke, Paul (Karolyn) Decker, Chet (Courtney)Decker,
Tera Decker.1 great grandchild: Nolan Lawrence Decker

Pueblo, CO.Nieces and nephews: Larry Stevens, David Stevens,

John Brostuen, Kenneth Brostuen, Terry Brostuen, David Brosteun,
Bill McGillivory, Merlin Anderson, Carol Anderson, Sherry Jensen,
Faye Borud, David Pankratz, Karla Johnson, Kim Pankratz.
Lawrence was preceded in death by, daughter Gloria
Decker, his parents Ernest and Lydia, sisters: Agnes Stevens,
Violet Cravens, Bernice Nesdahl, Anna McGillivray, Kathy Brietzke:
Brother, Raymond, and nephew Robert Norgard
Funeral Service: Tuesday, November 16, 2004, at 11:00
a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Minot
Visitation: Monday, November 15, 2004 from noon until
7:00 p.m. at Thompson Larson Funeral Home, Minot
Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot
