Evelyn M. Brekke • 1936 - 2010 Evelyn Berland was born March 16, 1936 in Lake Park, MN, to Johnnie and Alice (Harness) Berland. The family moved to Velva in 1944, where she was raised on the family farm north of Velva in the Simcoe area. Evelyn graduated from Velva High School in 1954. Evelyn married John H. Brekke on September 24, 1955 in Simcoe, ND. They resided in Velva, where they raised their three children. Evelyn was a homemaker while her kids were young. She later worked as a CNA at Souris Valley Care Center in Velva until her retirement in 1998. Evelyn loved her job, and was a kind and compassionate caregiver to many residents during her employment. John passed away on January 21, 1998. Evelyn was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva, and an active member of the Senior Citizens in Velva. Evelyn was very talented. She was gifted at crocheting afaghans and doilies, embroidery and sewing. In her younger years she was an avid bowler. Evelyn’s yard was always kept neat and adorned with flowers and plants. Evelyn enjoyed doing word searches and puzzles. She could always be talked into a card game or Rummicube with her grandchildren, and always had a treat, or gum and mints in her purse for them. She was an extra special mom and grandma. Evelyn was an example of hopefulness and graciousness to her family and friends. Her kindness and warm smile will be dearly missed. Those who shared in her life, children, Kathy (Nick) Schumacher, Kenmare, ND, Dean Brekke, Sawyer, ND, and Joleen (Troy) Thomas, Minot, ND; grandchildren, Adam Schumacher, Kara Schumacher and her fiancée Kacy Keysor, Ross Schumacher, Morgan Brekke-Sisk, Dakota Brekke, Mariah Brekke, Jocelyn Thomas, Hadley Thomas and Thea Thomas; great-grandchild, Isaiah Houston; sister-in-law, Jean Berland, Velva and brother-in-law, Arlo Faul, Lodi, CA; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents, Johnnie and Alice Berland; brothers, Wayne, Donald, Gordon and Allen “Jack” Berland, and sister, Delores Faul. Funeral: Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva, ND. Visitation: Wednesday, August 4, 2010, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva, ND.
