Larry "Canada"
Brekhus • 1948- 2006 Larry was born on February 4, 1948, the son of Arthur and Garnet (Johnson) Brekhus in Kenmare, ND. He was reared and educated in the Rockford Township. In October of 1968, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Lundgren. The couple later divorced. On April 12, 1968, Larry entered the United States Marine Corps, as a scout sniper. He proudly served his country, receiving four Purple Hearts, the National Defense Service medal, Vietnam service medal w/1*, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/device, Vietnamese Cross of Gallentry, the expert Rifle badge, and many other medals, to numerous to list. He was honorably discharged on November 26, 1969. He was one of North Dakota's highest decorated Marines. Following his discharge, Larry worked for S + H construction for a number of years, the Hartman Brekhus farm and The Nelson Ranch for a few years. He was a member of the Evanger Lutheran Church, rural Kenmare. Larry was also a charter member of the New Horizon motorcycle club. He enjoyed camping and fishing with his family and friends at the Mouse River Park. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. He is survived by: Son: Bryan "Buck" (Anjela) Brekhus, Napa, CA; daughter, Nicole Brekhus, Bullhead City, AZ; step-son: Joseph Olney, Anselmo, NE; grandchildren: Tyler, Naomi "Evangeline",Sara and Isabel Brekhus, Andrew and Paige Olney; brothers: Milt (Jean) Brekhus, Kenmare, ND; Steven (Janice) Brekhus, Kenmare, ND: sisters: Dorothy (Tony) Mello, Las Gatos, CA; Doris (Johnny) Kraft, Williston, ND; Geraldine (Will) Shuck, Aberdeen, SD; Marie (Marvin) Welsch, Surrey, ND: companion, Bonnie NeSmith, Velva, ND; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by: parents and brothers, Art Jr., and Lyle, sister, Janet Henderson Funeral Service: Saturday, August 5, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Evanger Lutheran Church, rural Kenmare, ND.
