Herbert F. "Herbie" Braun 1923 - 2005

Herbert F. "Herbie" Braun, 81, Minot, died Tuesday, November 15, 2005, in the Souris Valley Care Center, Velva.

Herbert was born December 2, 1923, in St. Mary's Township, rural Foxholm, ND, the son of Alois and Anna (Berlinger) Braun. He was reared and educated in the Foxholm area and attended rural school in St. Mary's Township, Ward County.

On November 28, 1944 he entered the United States Army and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged August 21, 1946, and returned to North Dakota.

On June 14, 1958 Herbert married Darlene F. Wilmot at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot. Herbert began employment with the Great Northern Railway in 1946, which later became the Burlington Northern Railroad. He worked as brakeman/conductor for 47 years until his retirement on June 17, 1993.

While working on the railroad Herbert also helped work on the family farm near Foxholm for many years. His wife Darlene passed away on October 17, 1998.

Herbert was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot. He was also a member of the United Transportation Union, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Survivors: Sons, Michael Braun and his companion, Lori Pedersen, Fargo, ND, Timothy Braun and his companion, Karen Young, Minot, Patrick (Donna) Braun, Fargo; daughters, Nancy (Shannon) Castanon, of Littleton, CO and Studio City, CA, and Kathleen "Kelly" (Curtis) Ratcliff, Collinsville, Ill; 14 grandchildren, Nicole Braun, Dillan Pedersen, Brooke Braun, Joseph Castanon, Justin Nicolas, Jessica Braun, Corey and Carrie Young, Marie and Isaac Bowser, Rachel and Aaron Ratcliff, Maria Braun and JoAnna Braun; sisters, Theresa Velo, Williston, Rose Mary Fager, Osage City, KS, and Sister Miriam Braun SMP, Bottineau, ND; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Herbert was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene; his parents; siblings, Edmund, Ewald, Joseph, Sister Adeline SMP, Alois Jr., Sister Monica SMP, Sylvester, Raphel and Herman.

Funeral: Saturday, November 19, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.

Vigil Prayer Service: Friday at 5:00 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Visitation: Friday, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.
