Blanding N. Borstad 1924 - 2002

Blanding N. Borstad, 78, 1900 28th St. SW, Minot, died Sunday, October 20 , 2002 in a Minot medical center.

He was born on June 1, 1924, in Devils Lake, ND, the son of Haakon and Alma (Peterson) Borstad. He was raised and educated in Devils Lake and graduated from Devils Lake High School in 1942. He married Mavis Christianson on December 31, 1943 in Devils Lake, ND. He enlisted in the United States Army and served during WW II. He was honorably discharged from the Army and returned to ND. They farmed near Devils Lake from 1946 to 1962. He also served as Veterans Service Officer while living in Devils Lake. He and his wife Mavis moved to Minot, and he went to work for the Department of Agriculture in the Ward County ASCS office. He worked there until 1978. He then went to work for the ND Tax Commissioner's Office. He was hired by former ND Tax Commissioner Byron Dorgan, and also served under Tax Commissioner Kent Conrad from 1978 to 1985. Blanding was noted for his excellent people skills, knowledge of current affairs, and superb work ethic, which enabled him to serve the state of North Dakota with distinction. Following his retirement, he started M & B Management Service, and worked to consult and help many Minot area farmers. His wife, Mavis died on March 6, 1992. Blanding remained living in Minot until the time of his death.

He attended Christ Lutheran and Saron Lutheran Churches, both of Minot. He was a member of the American Legion Post #26 and the Moose Lodge, both of Minot. He was also very active in the Democratic Party, both locally and on the statewide level. In his spare time, he built several houses in the Minot area, and enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends.

Survivors: two sons, Barry Borstad and wife Karen, Bismarck, ND, and Blanding "Skip" Borstad, Jr. and wife Margo, Beulah, ND; five grandchildren, Kirsten Borstad and fiancé Paul Nowak, New York City, NY, Dr. Gunilla-Ann Borstad, Denver, CO, Josh Borstad, Forest Grove, OR, Dr. Brett Borstad and wife Dr. Lailani, Denver, CO, and Biana Borstad, Bismarck; one brother, Archie Borstad and wife Doris, Devils Lake; one sister, Orleen Anderson, Grafton, ND; brother-in-law, William Christianson and wife Joyce; several nieces and nephews. His wife, parents, and one sister, Evelyn Schafer, preceded him in death.

Funeral: Friday, October 25, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Minot, ND

Visitation: Thursday, October 24, 2002, from noon to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson, Minot, ND

Burial: Friday, October 25, 2002, at 3:00 p.m. at Devils Lake Cemetery, Devils Lake, ND
