Jack C. Bone 1915 - 2002

Jack C. Bone, 86, 209-9th Ave. SE, Minot, a former editor and assistant to the publisher at The Minot Daily News, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, in a Minot medical center.

He was born July 28, 1915, in Bangor, MN, the son of Hetty and Fred Bone. He grew up in Biwabik, and attended junior college in Virginia, MN. While in Virginia, he worked at the Range Facts Weekly Newspaper for two years. He attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in 1937 with a degree in journalism.

He married Evelyn Higgins on May 30, 1939, in Minneapolis. He continued working at the Range Facts Weekly until 1943 when he entered the Army, serving during World War II. He was stationed in Iwo Jima and was editor of the Iwo Jima Inquirer. After two years of service he was honorably discharged and returned to Minnesota.

He met Ray Dobson in Minneapolis. Dobson was the longtime publisher of The News and offered Bone the job of city editor there. He accepted the position and was city editor from 1946 until 1963. He then was named assistant to the editor. He later became assistant to the publisher and also was chief of editorial department personnel, positions he held until his retirement in March 1978. He continued writing his weekly column, After Deadline, until the mid-1980's.

Not long after Bone was hired, Hal Davies, the former owner and board chairman of The News, waved at a map in his office of the Missouri Souris Project and said to Bone, "I hope you're going to feel strongly about this project and see to it that it gets the attention of Daily News readers."

Thus, for Bone, began a tour de force in writing about water resources, water use and water management in North Dakota that continued through his retirement. He developed into a specialist in that field of writing, and became one of the most knowledgeable, articulate and influential people in North Dakota water resource development.

His work brought him the Distinguished Service Award in 1977 from the Upper Missouri Water Users Association, a four-state organization. That same year he also was named a recipient of the Alumni Golden Award from Minot State University for his services as a journalist. The North Dakota Newspaper Association also gave him an award for 50 Years In Newspapering. In 1988, he was honored by the City of Minot at an appreciation dinner.

Jack enjoyed his family, golfing, bowling and traveling. For several years, he and his wife, along with several close friends, vacationed together in San Clemente, CA. Their experiences became fodder for his weekly column. He was a member of the Lions and Exchange clubs, he served on the Minot Recreation Commission, was active in the Minot Chamber of Commerce and was a board member of the Minot Vocational Workshop.
