Lois J. Bley 1924 - 2011

Lois Bley PhotoLois J. Bley, age 86, of Velva, formerly of Lignite, died Monday, January 24, 2011, at the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva.

Lois June Olson was born June 16, 1924 in Bowbells, ND, to Gustave E. and Mary E. (Homiston) Olson.  She was raised and educated in the Bowbells and Crosby, ND areas. As a young lady she worked as a Nurse’s Aide at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Minot.

Lois married Robert M. Bley on September 17, 1942, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at Bowbells.  They made their home on the farm near Portal, where they raised their family.

Lois was known for her wonderful homemade baking and whenever anyone stopped by she would have lunch on the table in five minutes.  No one ever left the Bley farm hungry, or ever felt unwelcome, she was quite the hostess.

A true farm wife Lois was and it showed especially at harvest time when lunches were packed up and taken out to the field for Robert and brother-in-law, Alfred Bley; all the while she was raising eight children and tending to daily chores.  She was a hard working woman.

Lois was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Portal, ND, and was active in the ladies aid, she taught Sunday School, and was a member of the Altar Society.  She was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lignite, ND.

Those who shared in her life, son, Michael (Susan) Bley, of Lighthouse Point, FL; daughters, June Weidman of Voltaire, ND, Lois (Jim) Heitz of Lignite, ND, Florence (Michael) Murphy of Bienfait, SK, Barbara (Frank) Schaefer of Macoun, SK, Roberta (Charles) Ringwall of Columbus, ND, and Donna Mitchell of Minot; grandchildren, Brenda (Kevin) Fleck, Lance Opperude, Lee Ann (Michael) Larson, Loriann (Mark) Johnson, Lydia and Anna Hayes, Robert and Stephanie Sweaney, Kristopher (Lisa) and Crystal Murphy, Jeremy, Leanne and Christina Thomas; numerous great and great great-grandchildren.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Bley; sons, Robert Lee and John Michael Bley; daughters, Mildred Louise Bley and Mary Elizabeth Tanberg; sons-in-law, Wayne Weidman and James Mitchell; her parents, Gustave and Mary Olson, and stepmother, Mildred Olson.

Funeral:  Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Portal, ND.

Visitation and rosary recitation:  Visitation will be Saturday, one hour prior to the service, with the rosary recitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. both in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Portal.

Burial:  St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Portal, ND in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Portal, ND.
