H.E. "Larry" Bertsch • 1936 - 2011 Larry was born on March 1, 1936, in Orrin, ND, the son of Walter and Pauline (Degenstein) Bertsch. He was reared and educated in Harvey and entered the US Army. While in the Army he was stationed in various areas of the United States and earned his G.E. D. After he was honorably discharged from the service, he attended North Dakota State University (NDSU) in Fargo, ND. He later moved to Minot, where he worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad and attended Minot State University. He married Irene Ofsthun in Minot on September 14, 1957. It was after his education that he started working for Kinney Shoe Store first in Minot and then transferred to the Minneapolis/ St. Paul area where he served as a manager. He later went to work as an insurance agent for Minnesota Mutual Insurance, working in Minnesota for several years and later moving back to Minot, where he worked for Sun West and later started North Star Agency, where he was a real estate broker , and sold insurance and securities. Larry also was co-owner of the Chateau Lanes and Alley Cat Lounge in Minot, Crooks Lanes and Lounge in Rugby, Coyote Lanes in Williston, Midtel Communications and Idle Hour Bar in Burlington for many years. In his later years he built homes in the area. His hobbies included playing pinochle, hunting, fishing, Bingo and spending time with his family and dog, “Peechez.” Larry was a member of the Million Dollar Round Table of Minnesota Mutual Life Insurance, North Dakota Realtors’ Board, and was a life member of the Eagles Aerie, the American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus all of Minot. Larry is survived by, Irene; daughters, Michelle “Shelley” (Jerome) Gruenberg, Burlington; Kalleen “Kelly”(LeRoy) Slind, Minot; Stacy (Van) Pederson, Roseglen, ND; sons, Scott (Nealie Johnson) Bertsch, Minot, Jon (Kristi) Bertsch, Burlington; 12 grandchildren, Spencer Spaulding, Toni Gruenberg, Troy and Tylor Witt, Cassandra, Nicholas, Christopher and Summer Pederson, Tiffany, Jondrea, Rondi and Kasey Bertsch; four great-grandchildren Patience, Matthew, Gavin and Oliver ; brothers, Ron Bertsch, Bismarck, Gerald Bertsch, Bloomington, Jerome (Gloria) Bertsch, Mesa, AZ; Viola (Robert) Kalfopf, Townsend, WI, Sheila Stamm, Seattle, WA; sister-in-law, Marge Bunce, Bismarck, ND; brother-in-law, Clarence (Hannah) Ofsthun, Minneapolis, MN Larry was preceded in death by, parents, Walter and Pauline Bertsch; and brothers, Alley and Clarence Bertsch, and a grandson, Ronny Berdahl Funeral: Friday, August 12, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot, ND Vigil Service: Thursday, August 11, 2011 at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND Visitation: Thursday, noon to 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.
