Wallace B. Berntson 1919 - 2004
Wallace B. Berntson, 85, 3205 10th St. SW #C-10, died Saturday
July 17, 2004 in a Minot Hospital.
Wallace Bernell Berntson was born January 7, 1919, the son of
Benjamin and Maggie (Watson) Berntson in Sanish, ND. He was reared
and educated in Sanish, graduating in 1937. He was employed by
the Ford dealership in Sanish.
On September 21, 1940, he married Ida Anderson in Sidney, Montana.
In May of 1941, the couple moved to Kenmare where Wallace was
employed by Kenmare Motors for 18 years. During that time, Wallace
enlisted in the United States Army on June 23, 1944, in Ft. Snelling,
MN. He served his country in WWII, and was awarded the Good Conduct
Medal and the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was honorably
discharged on February 6, 1946, and returned to the Kenmare Motors.
In May of 1959, Wallace and Ida bought the Ford dealership in
Mohall, ND. Together they owned and operated it until his retirement
in November 1979.
They moved to Minot in July of 1992, and they spent the last
several winters in Apache Junction, AZ.
He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church where he served on
the church council and the Mohall city council. He was also a
member of the American Legion, Country Club, and vice-president
of Mohall Improvement all of Mohall. He served as a volunteer
firefighter in Kenmare and Mohall where he was a lifetime member
of Fireman's Association in Mohall. He was active with the District
Board of the Ford Dealer Advertisement Association, and was a
Lifetime member of Renville County Historical Society.
Survivors: Wife of 63 years, Ida, Minot; Son, Wayne (Patricia)
Berntson, Grand Forks; Daughter, Karen (Daniel) Laakso, Outing,
MN; 4 Grandchildren, Jon (Donna) Laakso, Jodi (Jeff ) Scott Laakso,
Melissa and Elizabeth Berntson. 3 Great-grandchildren Claire
and Adam Laakso, Jacy Scott Laakso; brother, Elwood Berntson,
Federal Way, WA; sisters, Mable McBain, Gladstone OR, Jeanne
(Philip) Johnson, Minot, Ella Mae Michalenko, Minot; numerous
cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents,
brother, Glenn Berntson, sisters, Harriet Halvorsen, and Amanda
Reed; and twin infant boys.
Funeral Service: Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at 11:00
am Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall.
Burial: Burial will take place at 3 p.m. on Wednesday
at Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation: Tuesday, July 20, 2004, Noon-7:00 pm at Thompson
Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Also 1 hour prior to the service
at the church.
Memorials preferred to Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall, the American
Heart Association or the American Lung Association.
