Vernon O. Berg 1915 - 2003

Vernon O. Berg, 88, Minot, formerly of Donnybrook, ND, died Saturday, March 29, 2003 in a Minot assisted living facility.

Vern was born on January 6, 1915, in Straubville, ND, to Ole and Minnie (Stene) Berg. He moved with his family to Donnybrook, and attended Donnybrook High School. Following his education, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps near Foxholm and other areas in North Dakota. He served in the United States Army in World War II with the 41st Armored Division from November 1941 through November 1945. He was honorably discharged from the service and returned to North Dakota, and began farming with his father Ole and brother-in-law Allan Axness. He farmed for several years and later married Leona Scharbow on July 9, 1965 in Kenmare. They lived in Donnybrook and farmed until the mid 1970's when he retired. His wife Leona died on March 25, 1994. Vern moved to Minot in October 2001 and lived in Brentmoor Assisted Living until the time of his death.

Vern attended United Methodist Church in Donnybrook. He was a 57-year member of the Donnybrook American Legion Clarence McCormack Post, Donnybrook, and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and abroad to many different destinations. He was a proud American and took great honor in his Norwegian heritage.

Survivors: daughters, Elvina (Howard) Rockeman, Donnybrook, Sula (Leo) Bruins, Minot and Linda (Ira) Scherrer, Bellevue, WA; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Thelma Anderson, Donnybrook; sisters-in-law, Zola Mae Berg, Kenmare and Ardell Berg, Donnybrook; brothers-in-law, Allan Axness, Des Lacs, ND and Mearl (Lila) Cline, Waterloo, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces , grand nephews and cousins also survive. His wife, parents, three brothers, Raymond, Alvin and Allen Berg, sister, Arline Axness and brother-in-law, Ralph Anderson preceded him in death.

Funeral Service: Wednesday, April 2, 2003, 11:00 a.m. at United Methodist Church, Donnybrook, ND.

Prayer Service: Tuesday, April 1, 2003, 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.

Visitation: Tuesday, April 1, from noon to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: Wednesday, April 2, 2003, 2:30 p.m. at Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.
