Brian D. Bergan 1965 - 2003
Brian was born on March 13, 1965 at Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD, to Rachel Spotted Wood and Sam Johnson. His mother died when he was 10 and he was adopted by Cliff and Marian Bergan, then of North Aurora, Illinois. Brian was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church, Batavia, Illinois. He attended North Aurora Schools including one year at Valley Lutheran High School, Geneva, Illinois. He had participated in Cub Scouts and Little League, also in summer swimming classes. As an adult, Brian was employed at various factory jobs, often in supervisory positions. He preferred working outdoors in lawn care and construction and was a hard worker. With his father, he was privileged to go on a guided fishing trip to Northern Minnesota. The family enjoyed trips to Disney World, Washington, DC, Colorado and the Black Hills. He was thrilled by his first plane ride at the age of eight and glancing quickly out the window gasped "I might as well enjoy it while I'm living." Brian had a special sense of humor that friends and family appreciated. He was talented in drawing and began sketching the altar and cross of Bethany Church (in perspective) from the family's balcony pew! He loved music, was a good baby sitter and had a special fondness for animals. In his adult life Brian's lifestyle put great stress on his body but he always "bounced back" and was a true "survivor." He was struck by a heavy City of Sioux Falls truck on Monday, February 10, 2003 and sustained head injuries and was put on a respirator but never regained consciousness. Brian died Thursday, February 13, 2003; his internal organs have already given new life to four recipients through LIFE SOURCE. Blessed be his memory. Survivors: mother, Marian, 202 University Ave. E, Minot, ND 58703, brothers, Doug Johnson, Sioux Falls, Eric Bergan, Holmes Beach, Florida, Paul Bergan, Hancock, NH; sisters, Debby Lynn (Dan) Risener of Sioux City, Iowa and Sandy Berg of Sioux City, Iowa; aunt, Darlene Johnson, Yankton, cousins, Aaron, Gayle, Jackie, Roxanne and Andy Johnson; nieces, Karen Tatro, Bennington, NH, Kendra Bergan, Waltham, Mass and many other nieces, nephews and cousins as well as very many friends.
