Henry "Hank"
Bakken 1916 - 2004 Henry "Hank" Bakken, 87, 305 8th Ave NE, Minot, died Sunday in a Minot nursing home. He was born on December 8, 1916, on the family farm in South Prairie, North Dakota, the son of Andrew and Netta (Amlien) Bakken. He attended school in Willis Township, Ward County. In 1942 he entered the United States Army. He served during World War II in Normandy, France and Sicily and was awarded the Purple Heart. Henry was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned to North Dakota, where he farmed with his father. He later purchased a farm in Freedom Township where he farmed for a time. Hank later worked for Bridgeman Cremery. He married Virginia Pekos in 1977 and they resided in Minot. Hank entered Trinity Homes in 2001. He was a former member of Saron Lutheran Church, rural Minot, the Veteran's of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, both of Minot. Survivors: wife, Virginia, Minot; daughter, Betty Mellor, Charlotte, NC; sisters, Martha Hansen and Ruth Watland, both of Minot and Ilene (Eugene) Yost, St. Paul, MN; bothers, Clifford (Ruth) Bakken, Minot and Oscar (Corrine) Bakken, Fargo and sister-in-law, Lil Bakken, Minot. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mable Kerner; and brother, Andrew Bakken, Jr. MEMORIALS ARE PREFERRED TO ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH, MINOT. Funeral: Wednesday, 2:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Minot. Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church.
