Olvine "Ollie"
Bach • 1902 - 2004 Olivine "Ollie" Bach, 101, 2750 42nd St. NE, Minot, ND, died Thursday, July 15, 2004 in a Minot Hospital. Ollie was born on December 1, 1902, near Maxbass, ND, the daughter of Charles and Elise (Juneau) Fees (Pease). Her family was a pioneer family that helped start Juneau, Alaska and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was reared and educated in the Maxbass area and as a preschooler she herded sheep. She rode horses to school and in later years drove the buggy and picked up and dropped off other children. She married Harry Culbertson. They started the Culbertson Hippodrome Show, which consisted of 21 thoroughbred horses, four mules and two monkeys and they traveled the fair circuit throughout the United States. They held parades, dances, mule races and liberty drills. They also bred and raced thoroughbred horses. She was the only woman jockey on the fair circuit. Harry later died of tuberculosis. In 1932, she married Lloyd Bach. Ollie and Lloyd continued on with the show for several years before moving to Minot and living in a log cabin on the ND State Fair grounds in Minot for about 25 years. They helped take care of the fair grounds operated a riding stable and taught riding and sold horses. She also ran a daycare. They were founding members of the Minot Trail Riders in 1940 and received lifetime memberships in 1979. The Bach's eventually moved to a home next to the Souris River in Minot, which barely survived a major flood in 1969. Lloyd Bach died in 1985 from injuries suffered a vehicle accident. They had one daughter, Darlene who died in 1998, after living with multiple sclerosis for more than 30 years. She is survived by her grandsons, L. Patrick (Jeana) Walsh, Minot and J. Mikel Walsh, Minot; son-in-law, Jerome Walsh, Minot; great-grandchildren, Shanda (John) Williams, Stacy (Doug) Samuelson, Jim Walsh, Damien Walsh, Beth (Scott) Canning; Erin, Emily and Ellen Walsh; great-great grandchildren, Kelsey and Colton Olson, Jacob Kossan, Henry and James Canning; brother, Pat (Edna) Pease, Everett, Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, daughter, Darlene Walsh, two sisters and three brothers. Funeral: Monday, July 19, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot Visitation: Sunday, July 18, 2004 noon until 5 p.m.
