Mildred V. Bachmeier, 83, Minot, died Friday, February 29, 2008 in a Minot hospital.

Mildred was born February 20, 1925 in St. Paul, Minnesota, the daughter of Edgar and Lillian (Schoenberg) Cherry. As a baby she lived with her grandparents Albert and Mary Schoenberg in Benedict, ND. At the age of seven she moved to Nohly, MT and lived with her mother and step-father, Pete Emly.

On October 17, 1942 she married Bertram Haugen. Together with his parents they homesteaded their farm in the Four Mile area, northwest of Fairview, MT. To this union four children were born. Mr. Haugen passed away unexpectedly in April of 1958. Mildred did a wonderful job nurturing her children even though times were tough.

Mildred loved to read, and spent many hours reading to her children, and in later years she read to the children she provided daycare for, as well as her grandchildren. She often stated how she wished she could have had a higher education, but her love of reading allowed her to educate herself, as well as others.

Mildred met and married the second love of her life, John E. Bachmeier in Harvey, ND on October 10, 1964. To this union one son was born. Mildred and John and their family traveled to various cities and states due to his employment. They really enjoyed the job site in Roseau, MN, as they were avid fishing fans and spent many hours at Lake of the Woods fishing. John and Mildred decided to settle in Surrey and then in Minot, where Mildred enjoyed planting and raising their gardens. What a Green Thumb she had! She also ran a daycare in her home and kept a book of every child she cared for. Mildred was an excellent baker and cook. Her son-in-law stated, her leftovers were better than his wife's first runs. She always made her families special cookie and candy boxes for Christmas, even when arthritis was crippling her beloved hands. She made her grandchildren character cakes, which demonstrated her abundant love for them.

Mildred loved music and taught herself by ear to play several instruments. She played the organ and loved to hear her family sing as she played. She also enjoyed playing the violin and the accordion. In later years she loved listening to country western tapes and gospel music.

Mildred had several hobbies in her life which she enjoyed, including, playing horseshoes, bingo, going to the casino, fishing, going to the Nodak races, jig-saw puzzles and reading, but mostly the joy of her family and spending holidays with them. We will always love you deeply and miss you Ma Ma.

She was a former member of the Four Mile Lutheran Church in Montana and later Zion Lutheran Church in Fairview, MT. While living in Minot she was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church. She was involved in the ladies aid groups of the Lutheran Churches. She was active for several years with the RSVP - Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which she really enjoyed. Mildred was a former member of the Moose Club and enjoyed many a bingo session there.
