Jacob P. Bachmeier, 81, Burlington, died Wednesday, September 9, 2009 in a Minot nursing home.

Jacob Philip Bachmeier was born to Felix and Katherine (Scmaltz) Bachmeier February 11, 1928 on the family farm near Orrin, North Dakota. Together with his fifteen brothers and sisters, he worked hard tending livestock, milking cows, working in the fields and garden, and other chores needed to help take care of a large family. He went to school in Orrin and graduated from the eighth grade. He sometimes drove the team of horses which pulled the covered-wagon school bus. Jacob continued helping on the farm until he was twenty-one and then worked as a farmhand for Frank Voeller of Rugby.

At a dance in Orrin, Jake met his future wife, Marcellina Bachmeier. Since Marcellina had vowed she would never change her last name, it was a perfect match. They were married June 12, 1951 at St. John's Nepomuc Church, Blumenfeld, ND. They have lived in the same house in Burlington for most of their fifty-eight years of marriage; and it was there that they raised their four children.

Jacob was inducted into the U.S. Army October, 1951 and proudly served his country during the Korean War until his honorable discharge July, 1953. He served thirteen months on the front lines in Korea and achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class. He also received other medals: Korean Service Medal; United Nations Service Medal; Combat Infantry Badge; Good Conduct Medal; and the Purple Heart for wounds received Oct. 23, 1952. It was a difficult time for a farm boy from North Dakota, but he was a good soldier and made his family proud.

For a few years, Jacob worked for the Soo Line Railroad. It was a better fit when he began working construction. It was a life-long career where he worked in all aspects of building; from framing, roofing, pouring concrete and everything in-between. He worked for many years for Gust Kalk Construction, Ervin Larson Construction, Watne Realty, and then on his own as Jake's Construction before retiring in 1990.

Jacob enjoyed fishing and had many fish stories to share. Other hobbies included: playing cards with family or friends; woodworking; taking family movies; RV camping with Sam's Club; collecting model horses and animals; going to auction sales and gardening. He was a "jack-of-all-trades" and could repair or make-do with anything. He was a social person and loved to "shoot the breeze" over coffee at Behm's Truck Stop. His great sense of humor and teasing will be remembered by many friends and family members.

Jacob is survived by: loving wife, Marcellina; children; Shirley (Steve) Albright, Lansford, ND; Timothy (Donna) Bachmeier, Granville, ND; Beverly McLeod and fiancee Scott Schwisow, Cottonwood, AZ. Grandchildren: Chad (Amber) Bachmeier; Chasity (Jerry) Sevland; Christopher and Clayton Bachmeier; Addam (Tamany) Albright; April (Shawn) Klein; Andrew and Alex Albright; Aaron Bachmeier, Heather Bahls, and Rodin McLeod. Sisters: Helen Simons; Julia Kremer; Amelia (Albert) Brown; Esther (Joe) Goldade; Adeline Bonn; Caroline (Leo) Heilman; Gertrude Aabrekke, and Janice (Dan) Phillips. Also surviving are numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and two aunts.
