Martha Virginia Axness
1922 - 2007 Martha was born in Eureka Township in Ward County on May 20, 1922, to Charles and Eva (Bowen) Lade. She lived on the farmstead west of Ruthville until she was seventeen years old. Martha attended Eureka School and graduated from the eighth grade. She married Sanford Axness on December 22, 1939, at the parsonage in Carpio, ND, by the Rev. Jonas Helland. Martha and Sandy raised two children while farming in the Carpio area until 1949, when they moved to Minot. Martha was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Minot, where she served on several committees, was a Luther League counselor, Sunday School teacher, member of Zion Lutheran Church Women and church circles. She was also a member of the Silver Connection. Martha was always proud of the school Sharon and Charles attended, Minot Model, where she was a member of the Parent Teachers Association and served on the executive board. Martha was also active in scouting as a Girl Scout leader and den mother. She was employed by Trinity Medical Center, Lutheran Homes for fifteen years earning three service pins. Martha was extremely proud of her two children, the teacher and the preacher. Her son-in-law and daughter-in-law were always thought of highly. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly. Survivors: daughter, Sharon (Duane) Dokken, Minot; son, Charles (Linda) Axness, Fremont, NE; grandchildren, Shannon (Monica) Dokken, Waseca, MN, Kim Dokken, Henderson, NV, Kathy (Art) Haskins, Minot, Sheldon Dokken, Minot, Danette (Ty) Krumwiede, Minot; seven great-grandchildren, Joshua and Justin Dokken, Waseca, MN, Kori, Patrick and Jon Haskins, Minot, and Trey and Dane Krumwiede, Minot; sister, Ida Johnson, Blaine, WA; sister-in-law, Ila Axness, Mohall, ND; brother-in-law, Stan Tellvik, Port Orchard, WA; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Sandy who died on February 14, 1988, her parents, Charlie and Eva, two sisters, Daisy Hoelscher and Evelyn Peterson, and four brothers, Harvey, Carl, Elmer, and Albert Lade. Funeral Service: Thursday, May 17, 2007, at 10 a.m.
