Allan M. Axness 1922 - 2009 Allan was born October 24, 1922 in Newcomb Valley, Arcadia, WI, to Carl and Mabel (Moe) Axness. He was raised on a dairy farm along with his two sisters and six brothers. He attended rural grade school and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1941. In the fall of 1941 at the age of 18 he left his family in Wisconsin to follow the harvest fields, and ended up in Donnybrook, ND. There he met the love of his life, Arline Berg, while harvesting for Ole Berg. He always said she was the prettiest girl he’d ever seen. Allan and Arline were married on December 30, 1944. They started their married life in Donnybrook, farming with Arline’s brother, Vernon Berg. In March of 1953, they moved to a farm in Rolling Green Township, south of Des Lacs, where they raised their six children. Allan remained active on the farm all of his life. His wife Arline passed away on July 13, 1989. Allan was a member of Fagernas Lutheran Church, Arcadia, WI, the Des Lacs United Methodist Church, Des Lacs, ND, he was a board member of Des Lacs Grain Company, and a member of the Eagle’s Aerie and Moose Lodge, both in Minot. Allan enjoyed fishing, hunting, Twins baseball, his chew, traveling, going to casinos and he enjoyed going to lutefisk suppers, from fall to Christmas and attended as many as he could. He especially loved everything about the farm, from springs work to harvest. You could always find him driving around the farm, voicing his opinion. He loved spending time with his 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He always had candy in a dish and cookies in a jar for them. He was a wonderful cook and was known for his June berry pie in the summer and his vegetable beef soup in the winter. Those who shared in Allan’s life, sons, Steven (Tari) Axness, Minot; Michael (Rachel) Axness and Roger Axness, all of Des Lacs; daughters, Barbara (Joseph) Schoen, Derby, New York; twin daughters, Terri (Scott) Tranby and Tamara (Larry) Thom, all of Minot; 12 grandchildren, Cole Axness, Cari (Chris) Christenson, Kristen “Krissy” Schoen, Joseph Schoen and Jill, Vanessa (Richard) Wold, Valerie Axness, Brock Axness, Timothy (Dana) Tranby, Traci (Michael) McLachlan, Trevor (Madison) Tranby, Toni (Jeremy) Hart, and Tory (Sarah) Thom; six great-grandchildren, Jacob and Nevaeh Christenson, Paighe, Braedy and Whyett Wold, Shelby Arline Tranby and Zachary Bosey; brothers, David Axness, James Axness and Carl (Lucy) Axness, Jr., all of Wisconsin; sister, Evelyn Pierzina of Wisconsin; sisters-in-law, Theresa Axness of Wisconsin, Thelma Anderson, Minot, ND, Ardell Berg, Donnybrook, ND and Zola Mae Berg, Kenmare, ND; brother-in-law, Russell Scharlau, of Wisconsin; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive. Allan was preceded in death by his wife, Arline; his parents, Carl and Mabel; brothers, Aymaar, Spencer, and Clifford Axness; sister, Marian Scharlau; sisters-in-law, Vivian Axness, Norma Axness, Mary Axness and Leona Berg; brothers-in-law, Gene Pierzina, Ralph Anderson, Raymond Berg, Alvin Berg, Vernon Berg and Allen Berg. Funeral: Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot, ND. Visitation: Monday, January 4, 2010, from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., all at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, and Tuesday, one hour prior to the service in the church. Prayer service: Monday at 4:30 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Burial: Rolling Green Cemetery, rural Des Lacs in the spring. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to an organization of the donor’s choice. Officiating Clergy: Rev. Following the funeral everyone is invited to join the family for lunch and fellowship in the church fellowship hall.
