Dorothy E. Andrews 1910 - 2003

Dorothy E. Andrews, 93, 1612 16th St. NW, Minot, died Monday, October 20, 2003 in a Minot hospital.

Dorothy was born on September 3, 1910, in a log cabin on the Al Joslin ranch in the Mouse River Valley (now covered by Lake Darling) near Grano, ND. The only daughter of four children born to Emil and Susanna (Bryans) Anderson, she grew up on her parent's farm in Callahan Township, north of Carpio, ND. She attended several area grade schools and completed the 8th grade at the Bryans School in Callahan Township. She attended Carpio High School and graduated in 1928. She continued her education at Minot State Teachers College in Minot, and received her teaching certificate in 1931. She taught the upper grades in schools in Grano, Ross and Mohall, ND, for the next eight years.

On October 2, 1938, she married Fred Andrews in Bottineau, ND. They moved to Williston, ND, and started their family, eventually having five children born in five years.
While raising her family, she worked in the meat department of Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store in Williston for several years. In 1954, she returned to teaching in Trenton, ND and Alamo, ND. She also found the need to upgrade her education certificate due to changing standards. After several years of night classes, Saturday classes, and five terms of summer classes, she completed her B.S. degree in Education on July 31, 1964. She was very proud of this accomplishment. In 1966, Dorothy and Fred moved to Minot, and she started teaching at Dakota School at the Minot Air Force Base until her retirement after twenty-nine and a half years of teaching.

Her husband, Fred, died on November 21, 1992. Dorothy continued to live in Minot, and in the last few years was living and receiving the best care at the Unsong Rinquette Foster Home in Minot.

She was a member of Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot, and belonged to the Ruth Circle. She enjoyed helping in church activities and bazaars. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting and making afghans for her family and grandchildren.
