Harvey Woodrow Anderson
1916 - 2003 Harvey Woodrow Anderson, 86, lifetime Carpio resident, died Tuesday in a Minot hospital. He was born July 16, 1916, in Carpio, ND, the son of Andrew and Hannah (Watne) Anderson. He was raised and educated in Carpio and graduated from Carpio High School. Following high school graduation, he attended college in Havre, MT. On March 28, 1941, he entered the United States Army, serving during World War II. Woodrow received many awards throughout his service, his European Theater of War ribbon having seven battle stars. He also received a silver star that he received at Barman, Germany. He was awarded the European-African Middle Eastern Theater Medal, the American Defense Medal, five overseas service bars, and the French Croix de Guerre. He was honorably discharged on June 24, 1945, having attained the rank of staff sergeant. Upon his discharge, Woodrow returned to Carpio and started farming. He farmed in Carpio for many years, before retiring in the early 1990's. His first wife, Alice Vangsness preceded him in death. In 1970, he married Marlyn Rostad in Bismarck. They continued living in Carpio after Woodrow retired from farming. He was a member of Carpio Lutheran Church, the Donnybrook American Legion Post #195, the Battle of the Bulge and the Minot VFW and DAV. He was an avid sportsman and was a member of the Minot Rifle and Pistol Club and served on the state board for several years. He was a champion shooter and is honored in the North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame and was invited to shoot as a guest in the Canadian Olympic trials in the 1980's. Woody also enjoyed woodworking, camping and being active in the community of Carpio. He was one of the original members that started the Valley Inn Café, a community owned café in Carpio. He also served as chairman of the Ward County Social Service Board for 24 years. Survivors: wife, Marlyn, Carpio; son, James (Rita) Anderson, Sheyenne, ND; grandchildren, Erika (Shane) Azure and Ryan Anderson; brothers-in-law, Freddie (Ilene) Freier, Bismarck and Harlan (Dorothy) Rostad, Minot and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Vangsness; parents; sisters, Twilla LeDuc and Adena Anderson and brother, Vernon Anderson. Funeral: Monday, 11:00 a.m. at Carpio Lutheran Church, Carpio. Visitation: Sunday from noon until 5:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. There will be no reviewal prior to the service at the church on Sunday. Burial: St. John's Cemetery, Carpio.
