Nola M. Almy, 74, Minot, former owner of Nola's Lounge, died Saturday, October 11, 2008 in a Minot nursing home.

Nola Koons a daughter of George and Madeline (Kelly) Koons was born June 1, 1934 in Westhope, ND. She was reared and educated in the Westhope area.

In 1950, she was united in marriage to Mel Slapnicka. They lived on a farm Northeast of Mohall, in Hoffman Township, where they raised small grains and cattle. While living on the farm, Nola also worked at Piggly Wiggly and Farmers Union Oil in Mohall. In 1973, they purchased Tony's Tavern in Minot. Mel passed away in 1977. In 1980, Nola sold the bar and reopened the bar again in 1986.

On December 5, 1980, she married Donald Almy. Together they owned and operated Nola's Lounge. They enjoyed their dart, pool, and softball teams. They enjoyed going to McQuade Softball tournaments as well as local games. Donald passed away February 19, 2006. Nola continued to operate Nola's Lounge until September of 2008.

Those who shared in her life: Sons; Curt Slapnicka, Minot, and Randy (Brenda) Slapnicka, Payson, AZ; grandchildren, Ryan (Stacy) Slapnicka and Chad (Melissa) Slapnicka, Williston, ND, Austin and Jessica Slapnicka, Payson, AZ; sister, Dorothy Ness, St. Vincent, MN; brothers, Dallas (Michael) Koons, Green River, WY, and Donald (Pannee) Koons, Oxnard, CA; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Nola was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Sid Hansen; husbands, Mel Slapnika and Donald H. Almy; daughter, Karen; sisters, Edith Hillesland, Ellen Hoskins, Margaret Juve and brother, Sherman Koons.

Visitation: There will be no reviewal, however friends may sign a register book on Wednesday from 2-6 at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Funeral Service: Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot.

Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.
