Hilda H. Almquist 1909 - 2003

Hilda H. Almquist, 94, 702 33 Ave SW, Minot, died Tuesday in a Minot adult foster care home.

She was born on December 3, 1909, at her family home in Bantry, ND, the ninth child of Elizabeth and Stefan Einarson. She attended elementary school at Elm Grove, a country school at which Hilda later taught. She attended high school for one year in Bantry, and the next three years in Upham, graduating from Upham High School in 1928. She then attended Minot State Teachers College and graduated with a Standard Degree in Education. She taught at Elm Grove for three years and at Deep Consolidated School for two years. She also taught at rural schools in Granville and Kramer for a time.

On September 12, 1936, she married Jack Almquist. They lived and farmed on the Almquist family homestead. They had four children, Gordon, Ronald, Karen and Mary. Jack died in April of 1976. Hilda stayed on the farm until 1980 when she moved to Minot. She lived at the Graceland Condominiums and in 1985 she moved to the Thompson Lake Condos. In October of 2001, she moved to Sommerset Court and on December 2, 2003, moved to the Semmen Adult Foster Care Home, where she resided until her death.

She was a member of Melankton Lutheran Church, Upham and Zion Lutheran Church, Minot. Hilda was very active in church and community activities. She was very proud of her Icelandic Heritage and was a member of the Icelandic Heritage Society.

Survivors: children, Gordon (Fran) Almquist, Geneva, FL, Ronald (Clayann) Almquist, Minot, Karen (Hjalmer) Carlson, Minot and Mary Gossett, Manistee, MI; grandchildren, Laine (Lisa) Almquist, Laune (Mike) Schaefer, Lynne Almquist, Aaron (Kristin) Carlson, Larry Carlson, Steven Carlson, John Gossett and Derek Gossett; great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Erik, Sarah and Alex Almquist, Michael and Kelsey Schaefer and Abigail and Karina Gossett; sister, Becky Morrison, Bathgate, ND; sister-in-law, Mildred Einarson, Mountain, ND and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; mother; father; step-mother, Thorunn (Johnson) Einarson; grandson, Christopher Gossett; son-in-law, Charles Gossett; brothers, Gunnar, Einar, Magnus, Oddur, Joe and Husky; infant sister, Gudrun Einarson and sister, Margaret Nikazy.

Funeral: Friday, 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Minot.

Visitation: Thursday, from noon until 3:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: Ash Grove Cemetery, rural Upham at 2:30 p.m.
