Norma Faye Allen 1949 - 2004

Norma Faye Allen, 54, 407 Madison Ave., Bowbells, ND, died at home in her sleep on Thursday, April 29, 2004, after a long and heroic struggle against cancer.

Norma F. (nee: Peterson) Allen was born on May 11, 1949, in Kenmare, ND, to Albin and Hilda (Johnson) Peterson. The youngest of six children, she attended school in Coteau, ND, during her elementary and junior high school years. Following the closing of the Coteau School, she continued her education in Bowbells, ND, where she graduated from Bowbells High School in 1967. She attended hairdressing and cosmetology school in Minot, and following her graduation, she returned to Bowbells and began working as a hair stylist in a local beauty salon.

Norma married Marvin Wayne Allen on April 11, 1970, in Bowbells. They spent their first year together loving in Glenwood, Minnesota, after which they spent the next five years residing in Carrington, ND. In 1976, they returned to Bowbells where they have resided since that date. Following her years devoted to rearing her four children, Norma resumed her career in hairdressing, operating her own Bowbells business for ten years until forced to retire due to the progression of her illness.

Norma was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker who took great joy in caring for her husband and each of her children. She also enjoyed numerous arts and crafts projects, sewing, music, Bible studies, baking, travel and especially entertaining family and friends with her splendid home cooked meals. Additionally she remained very active in a variety of community organizations. Her love of gardening led her to membership in the Gro-Belles Garden Club where she served as vice-president and later held the office of president and where she became involved in numerous projects. She served 18 years as a local 4-H leader who took great satisfaction in helping children learn various homemaking and life skills. For 12 years she was very active as a leader in both the Cub and Boy Scout organizations and was instrumental in both her sons obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout. She was a long time member of the Town and Country Homemakers Club eagerly participating in their projects and activities. She was a member and officer of the Bowbells Music Boosters. She was active with the Flaxton Fair Board and frequently involved in judging exhibits at the Burke County Fair. She was a member of the woman's auxiliary of the American Legion. For a time, Norma was a member of the Bowbells Methodist Church serving as co-president of the local United Methodist Women and as prayer chairman and treasurer. She also taught Sunday school for many years and served as a Sunday school officer. In recent years she had been a member of Grace Christian Fellowship Church in Kenmare, and later a member of New Life Church of God in Kenmare.

She is survived by (Marvin) Wayne of Bowbells, her devoted husband of 34 years; daughter, Larisa Cowee and her husband Anson of Lynnwood, WA; son, Nathan and his wife Danielle of Bismarck, ND; son, Matthew of Minot; daughter, Kristen Peterson and her husband Monte of Minot; brother, Gordon and his wife Diane of Palisade, CO; sister, Anne Maltby of Billings, MO; brother, David and his wife Linda of Flaxton, ND; and beloved grandchildren Nicholas and Thomas Allen of Bismarck; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Hilda, father Albin, brother James, and sister June.

MEMORIALS ARE PREFERRED TO THE TRINITY HOSPITAL HOME HOSPICE SERVICE OF MINOT AND KENMARE OR THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY.

Funeral: Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at 11:00 am at the United Methodist Church, Bowbells.

Visitation: Monday, May 3, 2004, from 1:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare.

Prayer Service: Monday, May 3, at 7:30 pm at the New Life Church of God, Kenmare.

Burial: Little Butte Cemetery, rural Niobe, ND. Burial will take place at 2:00 pm on Tuesday.
