Alice Marcella (Hartl)
Devereaux 1918 - 2007 Alice was born January 3, 1918 in Berthold, ND, the youngest of four children to Edward Joseph and Frances Estelle (Madden) Devereaux. Alice's early years were spent in Bowbells where she attended grade school. When Alice was nine years old her beloved father, Edward, was killed in a tragic motor vehicle accident. Alice moved with her mother and siblings to Minot. Alice attended St. Leo's High School where she graduated in May of 1936. As a young woman she dreamed of becoming an attorney. She apprenticed herself to a law firm and began to "read the law." But fate had other plans. In 1942 Alice married Dr. James F. Hartl and to that union five daughters were born. They were married for 36 years. Besides being a wife and mother Alice worked for over 30 years as a secretary. In the 1960's she was employed at Boeing at the Minot Air Force Base. Later she worked as a legal secretary for Mitchell Mahoney at the Pringle Herigstad Law firm for over two decades. Following retirement Alice moved to Tuscon, AZ to be closer to her sister, Mary Lee Ross. In 1994 she returned to Minot. Alice was a wonderful cook. Her apple pies and brownies were legendary. She was a master at creating delicacies with pheasant, venison, elk and grouse. Alice loved to read, dance and play bingo and bridge. She enjoyed traveling to places, like Hawaii, Spain and Germany. Alice was a devout Catholic. She was a member of the Catholic churches in Bowbells, Minot and Tucson, AZ, during her lifetime. She was a member of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. She was a Brownie Scout Leader and was a member of the Legal Secretary Association. Alice was a former member of the Minot Country Club and the Elks Lodge, both in Minot. Survivors: Daughters, Linda (Bruce) Wright, Maxbass, ND, Mary Lee (Ron) Anderson, Minot, ND, Jane (David) Rugg, Savage, MN, and Nancy (Peter) Stanziano, Grass Valley, CA; five grandchildren, Nicole Wright, Bismarck, William Wright, Czech Republic, Michael Anderson, Wilson, NC, Nate Anderson, Morrisville, NC and Lauren Rugg, Savage, MN; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter; sisters, Mary Lee Ross and Frances "Frankie" Sigerseth Wobbrock, and a brother, Edward Devereaux. Funeral: Friday, March 2, 2007, at 2:00 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND. Visitation: Friday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
