Alf A. Aanestad 1919 - 2010 Alf was born on June 11, 1919, a son of Rev. H.M. and Anna (Dahl) Aanestad in Esmond, ND. He was raised and educated in the Esmond area, graduating from Esmond High School in 1937. He attended Minot State and graduated from University of North Dakota with a BA. On February 22, 1942, Alf enlisted into the United States Navy. He attended officers’ training school at Columbia University in New York City. Alf received the World War II Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Asiatic Pacific ribbon. He was honorably discharged on September 27, 1946. Alf was united in marriage to Naedine Fredrickson on January 14, 1944, while he was receiving further training in Miami, FL. For most of their married life, they lived in Minot, where Alf held the position of Director of Financial Aid at Minot State University. Music was Alf’s hobby. He sang in college quartets, barbershop, and First Lutheran Church Choir. Alf and Dr. Joe Hegstad, former Music Department Chair at Minot State College had a dream of starting a male chorus in Minot. In October of 1974, their dream became a reality, when The Heritage Singers was born. Alf became an anchor bass in the choir which he loved. He sang with for over 30 years. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Minot, where he taught Sunday School and was a long time member of the Church Council. Alf was a member of the Minot Y’s Men, active with the Y’s Men’s rodeo and selling Christmas trees. He participated with the Golden Oaks club in Minot, understanding education in the Minot Public Schools. For many years, Alf volunteered at the Roosevelt Park Zoo and the Norsk Hostfest. But most of all, Alf enjoyed spending time with his wife, daughters, grandchildren and other family members. He was a wonderful family man who taught us many things, He will be greatly missed. A special thank you for the wonderful care Alf received from nurse Micki and the nurses at N C Little Hospice in Edina, MN. Those who shared in his life: Wife of 66 years, Naedine, Burnsville, MN; daughters: Susan Anderson, Minneapolis, MN, Sherry (Bill) Tapper, Burnsville, MN; eight grandchildren: one great-grandchild: brother: Jack Aanestad, Santa Barbara, CA; sister: Solveig Thorstenson, St. Paul, MN; Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Alf was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Sally Tofte, and five brothers. Visitation: Friday, August 20, 2010, from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm at Thompson Larson Funeral Home, Minot Funeral Service: Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 10:30 am at First Lutheran Church, Minot Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot Memorials received will be donated to the First Lutheran Church or the Heritage Singers, both of Minot Officiant: Rev.
