Charles H. "Bud" VanEckhout, 86, Minot, died Sunday, March 16, 2008, at his home of natural causes.

He was born on June 24, 1921 on the family farm south of Wabek, ND, a son of Louis and Anna (Rutten) VanEckhout. He was raised and educated near Wabek, attending the Wabek Consolidated School and graduating from Plaza ND High School in 1938. Following graduation, he went to work for the Soo Line Railroad. He served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II until his discharge from Ft. Lewis, WA with a rank of Tech Sergeant. He then resumed his railroad career.

He married Hope Lindstrom on April 10, 1944 at St.Leo's Catholic Church in Minot.

Upon moving to Minot in 1950, Bud worked at VanEeckhout Farm Equipment Company and Westlie Motor Company for many years. He and Leonard Pietsch then owned a motel in Salida, Colorado. He then moved to Portland, OR, where he resumed his automotive career at Brady-Wilson Motor until he retired. They moved back to Minot in 1988.

Bud was an avid hunter and was a longtime member of the Minot Gun Club, where he held many positions, including President. In 1996, Bud served as Colonel of the Roughrider Trapshoot. In 2004 he was inducted into the North Dakota Trapshooting Hall of Honor. Bud and Hope have spent the last 27 winters at Towerpoint Resort in Mesa, AZ. He has won numerous trapshooting awards in North Dakota, as well as is Arizona and Oregon. He also loved flying and fishing.and spending time with his pet Pomeranian "Bailey".

He was a member of the Towerpoint Fellowship in Mesa, AZ, and the Multnomah Bible Church in Portland, OR. He was a life member of the Minot Gun Club, the Minot Elks Club, the Moose Lodge and the Eagles Aerie.

Bud is survived by his wife, Hope; his daughter Renee Farrell and her husband Dwight "Chipper" of Minot: his granddaughter Felecia Farrell of Fargo, ND; brother Joe VanEckhout and his wife Mary of Makoti, ND; sisters Marie Jacobson of Crosby, ND, and Lorry Kramer and her husband Daryl of Minot.; sisters in law Rosie VanEckhout of Fargo, ND and Della VanEckhout of Minot. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers George and Robert, and a sister Felicia Legg.

Funeral: Friday, March 21, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Visitation: Thursday, March 20, 2008 from noon until 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Vigil prayer service: Thursday at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Interment will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.

Memorials are preferred to the Minot Gun Club.
