Mabel V. Steen PhotoMabel V. Steen, age 85, of Minot, passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2011, in her daughter’s home at Plymouth, MN. 

Mabel was born on June 15, 1925, to Bert and Ella (Helgeson) Mattern at Norma, ND.  She attended Clay Center School in Renville County and also graduated from Christy Beauty College in Bismarck, ND.

On June 1, 1947 Mabel married Leon Steen.  Together they farmed for over 40 years in the Glenburn area.  They were active members of Hope Lutheran Church of Glenburn where Mabel was involved with the women’s ministries.  She especially enjoyed the women’s Bible Studies and all the quilting activities with the women of the church. Leon died June 14, 1990.

Mabel moved to Minot in 1991 and continued to enjoy time with her family and friends.  She was active with the senior citizens bowling league, the neighborhood birthday club, the Senior Citizen Bible Study at the Parker Center and was faithful in visiting friends and family in the hospital and nursing homes.  She will be greatly missed by her family but lovingly remembered for her generosity and unwavering love.  Her devotion to her family was only surpassed by her faith and confidence in Jesus as her Savior.

Mabel is survived by her children: Lynette Steen of Brooklyn Park, MN, Verdine (Marianne) Steen of Spokane, WA, David (Julie) Steen of Minot, and Marlys Steen of Plymouth, MN; four grandchildren, Melinda Steen of Seattle, WA, Michelle Steen of San Francisco, CA, Karisa (Matthew) Carr of Minot AFB, and Luke (Rebecca) Steen of Garrison, ND; three great-grandchildren, Mattaya and Makenna Carr, and Benton Steen; siblings, Evelyn Christensen of Williston, ND, Alma Peterson of Salem, OR, Harold (Glenda) Mattern of Lyles, TN, Eldon (Betty) Mattern of Prineville, OR, Vivian (Lyle) Thompson of Bottineau, ND, and Marilyn (Don) Wolfe of Bottineau; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.  Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leon; and brother, Reuben Mattern of Maxbass.

Funeral: Friday, March 18, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Evangelical Free Church, Minot, ND.

Visitation: Thursday, March 17, 2011 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot

Family memorial service: Friday, March 18, at 1:00 pm at the church.

Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.

Immediately following the funeral service, everyone is invited to join the family in the fellowship hall of the church for lunch and fellowship.

The graveside service will take place following the luncheon. We will travel in a loose procession to the cemetery, obeying all traffic laws. Use extreme caution when crossing Highway 83 south into the cemetery as some traffic may not yield.

Mabel’s family would like to thank everyone for the many acts of kindness shown to them during this difficult time. Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten. May God bless the memory of Mabel.
