Marie Hagen-Bourquin 1956- 2010

Marie Hagen-Bourquin PhotoMarie Hagen-Bourquin, 54, Minot, died Sunday, October 17, 2010 in a Minot Hospital.

Marie was born on April 20, 1956, the daughter of Gerald and Ruth (Grasby) Hagen in Minot. She was raised on a family farm near Surrey and graduated from Surrey High School in 1974 as an honor student. While in high school she was active in the band and choir. She graduated from Minot State University in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance and a minor in Mathematics. While in college, she was active in music, performing with the concert choir, and jazz group. Marie also studied voice with Dr. Joseph Hegstad. She participated in MENC, the Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity and the marching band. It was while she was with the marching band that she met her husband, Barry Bourquin. They married on August 12, 1978 at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot.

Marie worked as a supervisor at K-Mart while she was attending college and began work at Town and Country Credit Union in Minot on October 29, 1979. Over the years she has had many positions there and at present was Assistant Vice President of Member Services. She also had a supervisory role with Town and Country Credit Union branches in Fargo, West Fargo, Ryder and Kenmare. She held various offices with the local credit union chapter and was a member of the credit union’s Relay for Life Committee.

Marie was a life long member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. She was baptized, attended Sunday School, was confirmed and married there. She had been choir director at Bethany for over 32 years. At present time she was on staff as director of the Bethany Sanctuary Choir, the Chapel  Youth Choir, and participated on the Worship Committee. As director of the choirs, Marie planned cantatas and other musical events. She was active in the Thrivent (AAL) Chapter for several years. Bethany had a special spot in Marie’s heart. It was there she developed such a strong faith in Christ.

Marie’s love of music started very young, as a fan of country music, especially Patsy Cline. At the age of 13, she sang from Bethany’s balcony for the wedding of her sister Jeanette. That started a career of singing at hundreds of weddings, funerals and other special events, culminating in a vocal duet with Rolf Stang on October 2nd of this year. She also sang the National Anthem at many sporting events. Marie was one of the founding members of the Voices of Note, which has been together over 20 years, and was one of directors of that group. She performed as a soloist for the Messiah many times.

Marie loved her family, attending her children’s games and other events. Beginning in 1997, she and “her boys” vacationed with her four sisters and their families in Walker, Minnesota every summer.

Marie loved to cook and bake coming up with her own recipes, or getting ideas from the food network, and trying new things out on her family. She always hosted a Christmas party for the Bethany Sanctuary Choir, for which she provided many of her original special dishes. Marie also loved to decorate, incorporating ideas such as the use of stars, the five points signifying the five people in her family. Through the years she had several collections, including clowns, santas, hats, and cookbooks. Marie was known for the pleasure she obtained from math and Sudoku puzzles and her satisfaction in making lists.

Marie was an avid sports fan, following the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Vikings. She started watching them at an early age and loved to watch the teams with her family. She played softball, golf, and when she was young, went to the sprint car races at the NoDak speedway. In fact her father made her a sprint car which she still has today.

Marie’s son Nathan died on January 22, 2003. One of her special charities was the Special Olympics, helping behind the scenes and singing for some of their events. She had a generous and caring nature that blessed those who were fortunate enough to know her.
